Who We Are

Fok the Counsellor was set up to offer a clear, practical alternative to therapy that can sometimes feel vague or overly focused on validation alone. Empathy and understanding are essential — they form the foundation of good work. But therapy should not stop there.

Our aim is to move away from that.

We focus on evidence-based psychotherapy, such as CBT and SFBT, approaches with strong evidence base. Our work focuses on helping people understand unhelpful patterns and make concrete changes in daily life. This may include low mood, overthinking, procrastination, anxiety, and relationship difficulties.

This is not about removing empathy or understanding — those are clearly essential and fundamental. But therapy should not stop there.

We take your time and energy seriously. The aim is not simply to feel better for an hour, but to support real progress outside the therapy room.

Founder Philosophy

As a founder of Fok the Counsellor, earlier in my career I followed the common expectation to primarily affirm and validate. Clients often left feeling temporarily comforted, yet still stuck in the same patterns. That stopped sitting right with me.

I watched clients put their hope, time, and money into sessions, only to leave feeling temporarily comforted but entirely stuck in the same daily patterns. Endless validation might make for a comfortable hour, but it doesn't get you anywhere.

I decided I couldn't work that way anymore. I want to help the people who actually want something different.

If you are looking for an echo chamber where someone just tells you what you want to hear, I am not the right counsellor for you. My goal is to help people who want to be challenged and who are ready to make changes in their daily lives. If you want clarity, practical strategies, and a focus on moving forward, we may work well together.

What to expect from therapy

Therapy with Fok the Counsellor is collaborative and goal-oriented. In our first session, we'll discuss what's brought you here, what you hope to achieve, and how we can work together to get there. We'll explain our approach clearly and answer any questions you have about the process.

Sessions are structured but flexible. We'll set clear objectives, track your progress, and adjust our approach as needed. We believe in transparency about what's working and what isn't, so you're always informed about your therapeutic journey.

Our role is to provide a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore difficult thoughts and feelings, while also offering practical tools and strategies you can use between sessions. Therapy isn't just about talking—it's about developing skills that create lasting change.

Whether you're dealing with a specific issue or looking for longer-term support, we'll work at a pace that feels right for you. Some clients see significant improvement in a few sessions, while others benefit from ongoing support over several months. We'll review progress regularly and make decisions together about the best way forward.
